Below is a list of possible activities for 2024; please check this page regularly as it will be continually updated as more events are planned/confirmed.
“Many hands makes light work”
January – June:
- Guest Speaker Events – quarterly at Members Meetings* – in person or online.
- Special General Meeting – Bylaws – January 9, 2024.
- Big Game Measuring Day & Shed Hunt Scoring – January 27, 2024: Calgary Horseshoe Club, with Sarcee F&G.
- Calgary Boat & Outdoor Show – February 9-11, 2024: booth (archery on-site) and the Kids’ Trout fishing Pond.
- Shed Hunting Fun Competition: wander the woods and bring home some antlers to be “scored” and win some prizes – Kids and open competitions.
- Winter Classic Fishing Derby – date TBD: a family event! Learn to ice fish, enjoy a warming fire, marshmallows. Twin Valley Reservoir.
- Women’s Outdoor Club Inaugural Happy Hour Meet & Greet – 3:00 pm, February 24, 2024 at Earls Restaurant, #355, 100 Anderson Road SE. To register, email Kyla: [email protected] or Britney: [email protected].
- Frank Lake Carp Fishing Day – CANCELLED; 9:00 am, March 23, 2024, at Frank Lake. With the ice melting at Frank lake, try your luck at going out and trying to catch some Prussian Carp. They are an invasive species in the lake and the more we can get out the better for the lake’s overall health and ecosystems. If you can attend please email Tyler at [email protected].
- Wild Game Dinner, Triwood Community Center – April 27, 2024: welcome cocktail party & appetizers, amazing wild game dishes, refreshments, auctions, raffles and awards presentations.
- Women’s Learn to Fly Fish – 10 am to 4 pm, May 25, 2024, Private Ranch (30 minutes south of downtown Calgary ): Join the Women’s Outdoor Club by the river for a fun and supportive inaugural Women’s Learn to Fly Fish event!
- Alford Lake Family Camp & Jamboree – June 7-9, 2024: a great weekend of family fun! Camping (tents or trailers) or cabins, archery, shooting (.22, centerfire & shotgun), fishing, campfires, BBQ.
- “Pheasant Committee Work Bee, Pheasant Pens” – June 19, 2024, 6 to 8 pm: committee members come together to do a Spring clean-up of the pens area and get ready for the arrival of the pheasants in July! Join this ‘legacy’ conservation programme.
- CFGA Member’s Evening, The Shooters Edge – June 26, 2024, 6:30 to 9 pm: chance to meet and mingle with our dedicated board and fellow members. Hear firsthand about incredible events and successes. Showcasing our exciting plans and events for the remainder of the year, offering you an inside look at what’s to come. Axe throwing competition, appetizers & refreshers!
- Women’s Outdoor Club: Summer Hike, Oxbow Trail Loop at the Weaselhead Natural Area – June 29, 2024, 10 am to 2 pm: Join CFGA’s Women’s Outdoor Club for an exciting Summer Hike & Social! This event is a free opportunity for our members to get outside, connect with nature, and enjoy the great outdoors together.
July – December:
- CFGA Archery Night, Archery World – July 3, 2024, 6 to 8 pm: join CFGA for a fun-filled family evening of Archery with other members!
- “Meet the Pheasants” – July 2024: join with members of the Pheasant Committee to have your family tour the pheasant-raising facility and walk amongst the birds.
- Learn about Wing-Shooting – August 14, 21, 28, 2024, virtual webinar: in this three-part webinar series will explore the roots of wingshooting, its evolution with the development of firearms, and the important role of hunting dogs. Alberta is home to many winged game species, so we’ll examine several upland species in depth to understand their life cycles and habitat needs.
- Family Group Camp – August 16-18, 2024, Aspen Crossing Group Campsite: RV or tent camping weekend of outdoor family fun events & enjoy a pig roast.
- Women’s Outdoor Club Summer Edible Plant Walk, Turner Valley area – August 24, 2024, 9 am to 1 pm: Our group will be hosted by Julie Walker from Full Circle Adventures, who will introduce us to over a dozen edible, native plants, and non-native plant species; we will also learn the basics of plant identification through smell, touch, taste, and plant growth patterns.
- Hunter “Sight-in” Day – Target Shooting and ‘Turkey Shoots’ – August 10, 2024: targets & fun ‘Turkey Shoots’ – hunting rifle benchrest (100-300 yards) targets & silhouettes (200-500 meters) plus .22 targets and silhouettes – at the world class ‘Rosebud Silhouette & Benchrest Club‘ west of Calgary.
- Women’s Outdoor Club Ladies Learn to Shoot – September 14, 2024, Session 1: 10 am to 2 pm; Session 2: 1 pm to 5 pm, Silver Willow Sporting Club. This is a great opportunity for a fun day out and an enjoyable introduction to the exciting sport of clay shooting in a friendly and safe environment.
- McKinnon Flats Bow River Cleanup and Barbeque – date TBD: CFGA has developed a McKinnon Flats Stewardship Partnership agreement with Alberta Environment and Parks (‘AEP’). The spring event will consist of a clean-up of the area, a BBQ, archery booth & events.
- Bird Hunting Tune-up: (AHEIA Dewinton range: fun Trapshoot & Skeetshoot (needs confirmation.)
- Pheasant Collection & Release Day – October, date TBD: join us to round up the pheasants, crate them up and take them to various sites to be released into the wild.
- Dog Training clinic: TBD.
- Hunting Techniques & Safety Clinic: – rifle, bow, shotgun tips & techniques and safety.
- Annual General Meeting – December, date TBD.
