Calgary Fish & Game Association – June 01, 2020 Board Meeting
Fishing Chair Report
I am writing this report on Friday May 22 and the past month’s air temperature has not risen enough to see any snowmelt in the mountains. But last weekend with an increase in daytime temperatures there was a slight drop in the snowpack. The Bow River flow forecasts for this week were in the 120 to 150 cms range but with the rain, Bow River flows have increased to 220 CMS in Calgary and close to 300 cms immediately below the city. It is now expected that the east slopes snowpack will start to melt, and the Bow River Basin flows will increase. We can expect to see a high flow year for south-western Alberta rivers that will be good for the fish but not so good for anglers.
McKinnon Flats Stewardship Proposal
Consultation continues with the new road expected to be rebuilt in September. Further capital improvements will be proposed to the containment of vehicle traffic and parking for 2021. As discussed previously, we should be able to discuss a Partnership/Stewardship Proposal in more detail by the end of the year.
Carburn Park Fish Stocking Proposal
Attached please find a Review of the Carburn Park Fish Stocking Proposal that has been discussed by the CGFA Board. The following statement concluded my report:
“At this point in time it is inadvisable for Calgary Fish & Game to move forward on advocating for what was considered a unique opportunity to expand fishing opportunities within Calgary. A more detailed assessment of the impact of stocking Carburn Park within an expanded scope of sustainable fish populations and the ethics of stocking a pond on a flood plain within the Bow River Basin.”
